Shopping Center Programs

Shopping Centers need to be safe for the public, in harmony with the community and environmentally friendly. Our Shopping Center Program provides an opportunity for community members to evaluate the centers in our community and their impact. Volunteers use a 29-point survey to inspect the property and report on their findings. Surveying takes about 35 minutes and surveyors may choose the center(s) they wish to survey.

Volunteers go out quarterly and survey the shopping center and report those findings to us. We then use that data to help shopping centers minimize the impact their actions have on our environment.

Shopping centers are not usually associated with the environment, and when they are, it is typically because of the negative impacts they have on the environment, such as the impervious surfaces and litter. With over 90 shopping centers in Prince William County, it’s critical to understand the impacts they do have on the community, and encourage landlords, tenants and customers to be good environmental stewards. Finding out whether or not they have recycling or if trash is filling the parking lot and common areas is one key to knowing how much trash is being generated at these centers and how well they are handled.

Why Survey?

Shopping centers are not usually associated with the environment, and if so it is usually because of the negative environmental impact of the pavement. With approximately 90 shopping centers in Prince William County it’s crucial to view shopping centers not as separate from the environment, but more as part of our built environment.
