Adopt Your Own
KPWB offers the Adopt-A-Spot Program, where residents or businesses can request a specific area to adopt in Prince William County to keep litter-free over the span of 2 years. Spots can include public areas such as street corners, libraries, schools, neighborhoods, roadways, etc. Once the exact spot is agreed upon, your application and a map of the area will be sent to the VDOT for approval. Once approval is received, you can begin your cleanups. Adopters must plan and execute 2 cleanups a year for a minimum of 2 years. Cleanups typically take 2-3 hours each.
When a spot is adopted, KPWB provides all of the cleanup materials. After the adoption is finalized and the second cleanup requirement is met, a sign is installed at the spot featuring the volunteer’s or their teams’ name.
Metal Sign Description:
- 18 inches tall x 24 inches wide
- Made of .080 aluminum
- Reflective material
- Signs are secured to 8ft (4×4) posts with bolts/nuts
- Set 2 ½ft – 3ft deep into the ground
- Holes are filled with Quikrete or Foam setting compound
- Sign placements are final
Volunteers can expect to...
- Request a location within Prince William County and discuss with KPWB
- Plan and oversee at least two (2) cleanups a year at your designated spot
- Recieve cleanup supplies from the KPWB office, including gloves, trash bags, litter pickers, vests
- Agree to a 2-year commitment to your spot
- Report data from your cleanup, including the number of volunteers, amount of litter collected, service hours, etc.
As proven by Keep America Beautiful, the presence of litter can decrease property value by 7% and increase crime, vandalism, environmental dilemma costs, lost tourism revenue, etc. Adopt-a-Spots help provide a flexible way for your team to take part in keeping our streets clean, and in maintaining pride in our environment. Data collected from spot cleanups is reported and analyzed by the county, state, and additional environmental data systems, as well as used to enforce county policy to ensure spots stay clean.

Help KPWB transform local bus shelters into public art spaces that foster a unique sense of place in our community! The adopters will submit artwork themes, designs, or concepts to the KPWB for review and approval. There is an Adopt-A-Shelter $1200 administrative fee to cover application review and artwork installation (and artists stipend, if applicable). The adopter further agrees to maintain their shelter by keeping the space free of litter and debris on an ongoing basis with a one year commitment. When a bus shelter is adopted, KPWB provides all of the materials needed to clean the spot. Shelter cleanups take around 30 minutes to 1 hour, including the time spent reporting.

Community beautification makes a difference to any person passing through your neighborhood. Environmental studies have shown that people are more inclined to litter in a space that is already polluted rather than a clean neighborhood or community space. Adopting a bus shelter is a flexible, creative way to help keep your corner of the earth clean, while inspiring others to appreciate their environment and become environmental stewards themselves. Many hands make for light work!
Other benefits also include the positive health aspects that come with interacting with your environment, such as lessened stress, chances for physical activity, promotion of natural relaxation, improved air and water quality, and more.
