Educational Outreach

KPWB offers educational experiences to any community group, school, or organization that is located in Prince William County. Our staff is capable of leading an outdoor project with your team, creating an educational presentation for your students, building educational materials on sustainability for your office, attending science-related booth events, running a one-time or reoccurring educational session for your club, and more. KPWB typically covers education on litter awareness, water quality, climate, beautification, and recycling. We utilize a variety of mixed media to educate our citizens about their individual environmental footprint and the steps they can take to a more sustainable lifestyle. Presentations are usually between 15 minutes and 1 hour, while activities, outdoor events, and booth events may run from 1 to 5 hours.

Learning how to care for one’s environment, how to live sustainability, should be prevalent in any young person’s education, and KPWB believes in the value of hands-on learning. Many studies have shown that environmental education inspires more civic engagement and a sense of belonging toward our natural environment.

“The components of environmental education are:

  • Awareness and sensitivity to the environment and environmental challenges
  • Knowledge and understanding of the environment and environmental challenges
  • Attitudes of concern for the environment and motivation to improve or maintain environmental quality
  • Skills to identify and help resolve environmental challenges
  • Participation in activities that lead to the resolution of environmental challenges” (Environmental Protection Agency, 2024).

When students are given the chance to explore environmental issues during their youth, a deeper sense of personal interest and responsibility toward our planet is cultivated; they are encouraged to identify challenges, to use critical thinking, and to test their problem-solving skills. Promoting environmental education in our county has been the leading staple of our mission, and is the most crucial element to building an environmentally sustainable future.
