DIY Record Bowls

DIY Record Bowls

There comes a time in every person’s life where they have too much stuff and not enough space, so you have three options: You can hold a yard sale and hope that you can make some extra money, throw it away or my personal favorite, upcycling! Old vinyl records that you don’t really want, but that you don’t really think anyone will want (we’re talking the embarrassing albums that you never want to see the light of the day) are great candidates for upcycling.   You can upcycle them into all sorts of useful things ranging from clocks to journals. A recent favorite of the author is to use old vinyl to make decorative retro bowls. Thanks to Keep Prince William Beautiful’s (KPWB) and Stars for Streetlights.com we can learn how to make an amazing one of a kind bowl to hold all your knick knacks!

Step 1: Gather your supplies

You really only need two things for this project, which is why it’s such a great project:

  1. A vinyl record (If you have one in particular that you won’t miss, you should probably use that, if you don’t though you can get a cheap record at a used bookstore.)
  2. A bowl (Make sure that it’s oven safe!)

Step 2. Preheat oven

Set the oven to 350 degrees and place the record on top of the bowl, placing both in the oven on the top rack.

Step 3: Wait for the record to warp

While it may seem like it would take a little time for a record to warp, it only takes a minute for it to be soft enough to mold.

According to http://www.starsforstreetlights.com you should be able to mold your record in the bowl, however the author found that she needed to mold it immediately after taking it out of the oven. Otherwise it’ll just awkwardly mold on top of the bowl, which is still cool, but a little more  abstract.

Step 4. Find a place for your new decorative bowl!

While you now have a great one of a kind bowl, you should probably only use it for decoration, like as a holder for various knick knacks. If you like this project, follow KPWB’s Pinterest board and check back every Friday for another Fun Friday post. Extra Idea – Use this project to create a one of a kind special gift. Select a record from the used book store that has a special song on it, or from a musical group with special memories for the recipient and create a bowl especially for them!
